Summary Explanation/Background:

Approval of this Resolution will allow William Savarese, Inc.’s four (4) asphalt mural designs to be installed on SW 1st Ave. between W. Atlantic Blvd. and SW 2nd St. and on SW 1st Ct. between SW 2nd St. and South Cypress Rd. as part of the Public Art project entitled, “Asphalt Art - Crossroads Connection.”  These designs are abstract in nature and are included in the backup to this agenda.  This project is funded in part by a matching grant from the Community Foundation of Broward (CFB): Art of Community Grant Program.  This grant award was approved by the City Commission via Resolution #2020-165.

The “Asphalt Art - Crossroads Connection” project consists of five (5) community engagement activities that will serve as inspiration in designing four (4) asphalt street art murals and eight (8) storm drain murals on NE 1st Street between City Hall and the Pompano Beach Cultural Center/Library campus in the Innovation District.  William Savarese, Inc. was approved as the selected artist for the project under Resolution #2021-34. Per the Resolution, William Savarese, Inc. has completed four (4) of the five (5) community engagement events as well as two (2) online surveys. The final community engagement event will take place prior to the installation of the eight (8) storm drain murals; the date for this engagement event has not yet been determined. The artist is currently working on final designs for these storm drain murals based on community and Public Art Committee input that will be presented to the Commission for approval prior to installation.

The budget for this project includes a matching grant from the Community Foundation of Broward for a total of project cost of $60,000.00. This funding was approved by the City Commission via Resolution #2020-165.  The project will end June 30, 2021.  Staff and the Public Art Committee recommend approval of this Resolution. 

In accordance with Section § 160.04  POWERS AND DUTIES OF THE COMMITTEE, the Public Art Committee has the authority to make recommendations to the City Commission on art, artist selection and artwork location.

 

Origin of request for this action: Public Art Committee

Fiscal impact and source of funding: Cultural Affairs Department and Public Art Program: $34,000.00 from Account # 315-6139-539-6514.  Fifty percent (50%) of this amount is covered by the (CFB) Art of Community Grant Program.
