summary

Summary Explanation/Background:

Following the work plan established by the City of Pompano Beach Sustainability Strategy, approved September of 2020, the City has completed Phase 1 of the work plan - a Sustainability Baseline, Greenhouse Gas Inventory, and Goals Report - setting a strong foundation for the City to purposefully become more sustainable and resilient by setting specific milestones and greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. To assist in this task, RS&H, Inc. was hired to guide our data collection and complete the baseline analysis and recommendations. The entire scope of work was funded via a grant awarded from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

Recommended Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Targets:
Short Term: 45% reduction below 2019 by 2030
Mid Term: 75% reduction below 2019 by 2040
Long Term: Net-zero by 2050

These goals are informed by the City’s GHG inventory and forecast, a survey of peer South Florida local governments, international political agreements and current climate science. The approval of the report and goals will advance us into workplan phase 2 and 3 - a Vulnerability Assessment and Project Implementation Plan - beginning this summer. The Phase 2 and 3 products will provide the project specifics and budget necessary for goal satisfaction. In the backup you find the 55-page report along with Appendix A which is the complete Sustainability Strategy, as approved last year, for reference.
