summary
Summary Explanation/Background:
The Sheriff’s Office applied for and was awarded a grant through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) program at BSO provides the Pompano Beach District with the necessary and vital funds to allocate resources to areas in Pompano Beach impacted by violent crimes, separate from calls for service. The availability of overtime funding through this grant enables our CST (Crime Suppression Team) detectives to immerse themselves in these neighborhoods, fostering essential connections that enhance communication and facilitate the collection of crucial evidence related to violent crimes. Our proactive approach has proven that building trust and engaging with residents and victims can significantly increase the number of witnesses and available evidence, leading to more successful prosecutions. The program provides BSO with the latitude to have these officers participate in our investigations and operations, targeting known suspects after a crime has occurred. A recent change in the mission for our Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) has allowed for unified monitoring of targeted areas and aggressive apprehension of offenders in Pompano Beach. With all the new intelligence, BSO will be targeting specific subjects tied to the known gangs in the city for apprehension.
This crucial funding through recent years has provided BSO with overtime hours for our officers which have demonstrated improvement in the acquisition and sharing of critical information on a real-time basis after a violent crime has occurred. This PSN Grant will and has proven to be a very effective tool in fighting and apprehending the most violent offenders in Pompano Beach. This Grant is a tremendous cost savings to the city as it pays for overtime that our CST detectives work in these efforts.
The total funding received under this Grant is $85,000. However, the Grant does not cover Federal Payroll Taxes nor does it cover Special Risk Retirement Benefits. Similar to what has been done in the past, the City will cover the cost of those expenses, which amounts to $34,553.
