Summary Explanation/Background:
In accordance with Section § 160.04 POWERS AND DUTIES OF THE COMMITTEE, the Public Art Committee has the power to make recommendations to the City Commission on art, artist selection and artwork location. The City of Pompano Beach is preparing to complete a 9-11 Memorial to be located at Founders Park, 316 NE 3rd St. Pompano Beach, Florida.
This project was approved as part of the FY 2016 Annual Plan Resolution # 2015-440, FY 2017 Annual Plan Resolution # 2017-36 and approved again under FY 2018 Annual Plan Resolution # 2018-52 for a total budget of $20,000.00.
A Call to Artists was posted March 1, 2018 with a deadline of April 5, 2018. Forty-five (45) artists submitted applications. At the April 24, 2018 9-11 Subcommittee Meeting, the Subcommittee recommended approval of Scape Martinez as the artist and two (2) alternates, Cherie Saleeby as first alternate and Asha Hanna as second alternate, to bring to the PAC for recommendation of approval. At the April 26, 2018 PAC Meeting, the Committee recommended approval of artist Scape Martinez for the project. Staff contacted Mr. Martinez. Mr. Martinez failed to meet deadlines in order to move forward with the recommendation. At the July 19, 2018 PAC Meeting, the Committee motioned to strike Mr. Martinez as the recommended artist and recommended approval of first alternate Cherie Saleeby as the final artist.
