Summary Explanation/Background:
The City of Pompano Beach’s Sister Cities Program was established in 2013 in coordination with Greater Pompano Beach Sister Cities, Inc. (GPBSCI). GPBSCI is a non-profit organization created to form international relationships with cities around the globe through cultivating cultural exchange, youth and education programs, economic partnerships and to provide municipal assistance. The City and GPBSCI have a Sister City relationship with Termoli, Italy currently.
The City and GPBSCI would like to establish Friendship City relationship with Sorrento, Italy. According to the Sister Cities International Program, the terms “Sister City” and “Friendship City” have different meanings. Generally speaking, Friendship Cities are less formal than Sister Cities. In some cities, “Friendship City” is often used as a first stage in the relationship, and after it is strengthened and the partners are sure they want a long-term relationship, they will become “Sister Cities.” A Friendship City is generally a demonstration of goodwill between two cities that does not carry the same level of commitment or obligation as a formal Sister City arrangement and is formed through an informal agreement which typically involves the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by the Mayors of the two communities to promote friendship and cooperation between their communities.
