Summary Explanation/Background:

This item will approve a Service Contract between the City and New Horizon Community Development Corporation, Inc. to operate a Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) for the City of Pompano Beach residents. The New Horizon Community Development Corporation (NHCDC) is a 501(c) (3) non- profit organization which has been in existence since 1997.

The program is scheduled to run from June 15, 2023 to July 27, 2023. The program is targeted to serve at least 50 - 55 summer students in the Pompano Beach City limits. The requested total amount for this agreement is $109,664.00.

This SYEP initiative is part of the City of Pompano Beach’s Strategic Plan. The goal of the initiative is to work with the Summer Youth Employment Program to provide employment to a minimum of thirty (30) economically disadvantaged students within the Pompano Beach City limits during the summer of 2023.  This initiative will allow the youth to obtain meaningful work experience, develop social skills and a sense of responsibility. 

The participants in the program will work with only local businesses and firms in the City of Pompano Beach.  These local businesses offer a variety of in-kind services to the participants, such as, on the job training and skills development. In addition to developing work experience, the participants also, gain valuable life skills through a series of training classes that will aid them in their future successes as young adults.

Fiscal impact and source of funding: $109,664.00, will be paid from the Summer and Youth Employment Program account # 001-9910-599-8238
