summary
Summary Explanation/Background:
This item will provide for needed FDOT Grant funding to complete phase one of a three phase (three year) CIP for the replacement of the Air Traffic Control Tower at the Pompano Beach Airpark. The ATCT is more than fifty (50) years old and has performed well beyond its useful life. The ATCT does not meet current design standards in accordance with Federal, State and Local safety, security and building (OSHA, ADA) rules & regulations. With the recent airport Taxiway and Hangar development the current tower position makes it difficult for the air traffic controllers to safely guide aircraft around the airport movement areas. The Tower Siting study will determine the best geographic position and optimal tower height for a new ATCT would be located on the airport. The airport engineering consultant will work with the FAA Technical Center located in Atlantic City, New Jersey to conduct site inspections, aerial surveys and prepare virtual simulation models to ascertain the best location to build a new control tower. This is an approved project in Airport Master Plan Update.
