The City of Pompano Beach and the Greater Pompano Beach Sister Cities International, Inc. (GPBSCI) received a letter of invitation from the City of Ercolano (Herculaneum), Italy to enter into a Friendship City affiliation through the Sister Cities International program (SCI) (https://sistercities.org/). Ercolano is located in the metropolitan area of Naples, Italy and the Campania region of Southern Italy. It lies at the western foot of Mount Vesuvius, on the Bay of Naples, just southeast of Naples. The medieval town of Resina was built on the volcanic material left by the eruption of Vesuvius (79 AD) that destroyed the ancient city of Herculaneum, from which Ercolano's present name is derived. Ercolano is a resort community and the starting point for excursions to the excavations of Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius.
According to SCI, the terms "Sister City" and "Friendship City" have different meanings. Generally speaking, Friendship Cities are less formal than Sister Cities. Among some cities, "Friendship City" is often used as a first stage in the relationship, and after it is strengthened and the partners are sure they want a long-term relationship, they will become "Sister Cities."
