summary
Summary Explanation/Background:

At its January 14, 2020 meeting, the City Commission approved an Agreement (Resolution #2020-95) with California based artist Linda Serrao to purchase a pre-existing Public Art Program artwork entitled, "Le Corsaire," for the Ali Building Sculpture Project. This project will be installed on the south side of the Ali Cultural Arts Center located at 353 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. The term of this original agreement expires July 14, 2020. Staff and the artist wish to extend the Agreement for an additional six (6) months after its expiration on July 14, 2020 to January 14, 2021.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is an extenuating circumstance beyond the artist's and City's control, it is projected that the artist will not be able to complete this project before the expiration of the original Agreement. The Call to Artists was for a pre-existing artwork or a commissioned design. As stated in the Call, the sculpture could be a free standing or pedestal-based artwork. If pedestal based, the artist is to supply a pedestal. The artwork selected, "Le Corsaire," is pedestal based. The artist is working with a foundry to secure the artwork to the pedestal. The foundry has been closed for the past several weeks per California's Shelter at Home order. In order to work with the foundry and the artist, and comply with California state laws, the Agreement needs to be extended to ensure that the artwork will be properly secured to the pedestal and delivered to the City. No additional funding is required for the extension of this Agreement.
