summary

Summary Explanation/Background:

FPL wishes to enter into a Master Solar Agreement to be able to install facilities throughout the City that can garner solar energy, and convert the energy into clean, renewable energy. As a function of this agreement, FPL will install “Solar Trees” and “Canopies” (see FPL Solar Now Presentation for details and renderings) at no cost to the City. At Staff’s request, FPL will install benches, tables, and power outlets at designated Solar Tree stations as well. Furthermore, FPL will maintain all facilities throughout the length of the agreement at no cost to the City. The energy generated will be stored and distributed throughout FPL’s main grid. The City stands to be a recipient of some of that energy, but electric charges (per kilowatt) will remain the same. The electric bills will reflect the use of solar power, and the City will be able to use that information to seek better LEED certification credits for future facilities (i.e., Fire Station 24). Staff has met with FPL on several occasions, visited FPL’s facilities in Juno Beach to assess the equipment, and has reviewed the agreement. Staff believes this is a win-win for all and recommends approval.
