summary
Summary Explanation/Background:
Approval of this Resolution will allow the recommended artist, Michael Gyula Szabo, who is the owner and president of SZABOWORKS, to fabricate and install an outdoor sculpture on the north lawn of the Pompano Beach Cultural Center located at 50 West Atlantic Blvd. This project, known as Pompano Beach Cultural Center Significant Sculpture, is part of the City of Pompano Beach's Public Art Ten Year Master Plan (Resolution # 2016-78) and the Public Art FY18 Annual Plan (Resolution # 2018-52). The artist has entitled this proposed artwork "Current."

The Public Art Master Plan initially allocated $50,000 for two Public Art projects at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center for Fiscal Years (FYs) 2018 and 2020. The Public Art Committee (PAC) has been working on this project concept since 2013. As approved in the Public Art FY18 Annual Plan, the funding for the two FY 2018 and FY2020 Pompano Beach Cultural Center projects were placed into one account for a total budget of $100,000.00 in the PAC's efforts to commission a significant artwork for the Pompano Beach Cultural Center.

A Call to Artists was posted on October 12, 2018 with a deadline of December 19, 2018. One hundred eight-eight (188) applications were submitted. Three (3) applicants were shortlisted and paid an honorarium of $1,000.00 each to create a fully detailed proposal.

The PAC and staff are recommending approval of this Resolution to allow SZABOWORKS to complete the Pompano Beach Cultural Center Significant Sculpture project.
