summary

Summary Explanation/Background:

The City of Pompano Beach (City) and the City of Lighthouse Point (LHP) have had an interlocal agreement since 1997 (amended in 2007) to provide for the distribution of reuse water for irrigation of LHP medians along Federal Highway.  Pompano Beach also provides drinking water within its service area to LHP through a 2002 franchise agreement.

The City and LHP have been discussing providing reuse directly to current water customers within LHP since 2014 and have amended the current 2007 interlocal agreement to reflect the delivery of reuse water directly to customers within the City water service area.

The City will serve approximately 450 current LHP water customers with reuse by constructing a major trunk line and installing mains and service lines.  The trunk line construction is expected to be completed within one year following contractor selection and is time sensitive due to two approved grants ($300,000 from State Appropriations and $400,000 from the South Florida Water Management District).  All construction will be completed within six years.  Connection by all customers is mandatory with single family residential connections being accomplished through the City’s I Can Water Program.

LHP unanimously approved the agreement after two readings at the February 14, 2017, LHP Commission meeting.  The agreement now requires City Commission approval.
