Summary Explanation/Background:
Approval of this Resolution will allow the City to purchase an already created sculpture entitled "Le Corsaire" from artist Linda Serrao for installation at Ali Cultural Arts, 353 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. This project, known as Ali Cultural Arts Building Sculpture (originally entitled Sculpture on MLK between I-95 and Dixie), is part of the City of Pompano Beach's Public Art Ten Year Master Plan (Resolution # 2016-78) and the Public Art FY19 Annual Plan (Resolution # 2018-52).
The location for the project, Ali Cultural Arts, was recommended at the April 18, 2019 Public Art Committee (PAC) Meeting. A Call to Artists was posted on May 21, 2019 with a deadline of July 16, 2019. One hundred four (104) applications were submitted and reviewed by the PAC. At the August 15, 2019 PAC Meeting, the Committee unanimously recommended artist Linda Serrao's sculpture entitled "Le Corsaire" for approval.
PAC and staff are recommending approval to purchase Linda Serrao's sculpture "Le Corsaire" to complete the Ali Cultural Arts Building Sculpture project. Upon City Commission approval of this Resolution, "Le Corsaire" will be delivered to the City. The City is responsible for installing the artwork.
In accordance with Section ? 160.04 POWERS AND DUTIES OF THE COMMITTEE, the Public Art Committee has the authority to make recommendations to the City Commission on art, artist selection and artwork location.
