summary
Summary Explanation/Background:
This Resolution highlights the School Board of Broward County's legislative obligation to protect and keep safe school personnel, property, students, and visitors, and to establish or assign school resource officers within the school district. While the Broward County School Board has provided some funding toward the salaries and benefits of the School Resource Officer Program, the City of Pompano Beach continues to supplement the Program's budget. In fiscal year 2021/2022, the salary and benefit cost for the City of Pompano Beach's School Resource Officer program was $2,742,753, which represents the City's pro-rated cost for the 10-month period in which SROs are assigned exclusively by Broward County schools, not including costs for vehicles, computers, uniform and training. The Broward County Schools funded $1,042,200 of the Pompano Beach School Resource Officer Program. In light of the recently passed property tax referendum increasing the School Board funding to 1 mill property tax or approx. $227,000,000 more per year in revenue, and the School Board's commitment to spending up to 17% of those funds on school safety, including hiring 500 safety personnel, the Resolution urges the School Board of Broward County to increase funding for the School Resource Officer Program.
