Summary Explanation/Background:
On November 1998, the electors of the State of Florida approved an amendment to the Constitution of the State of Florida authorizing the Legislature of the State of Florida to allow municipalities to grant an additional homestead tax exemption not to exceed $25,000 to any property owner who has attained the age of 65, and the household income does not exceed $20,000 (Adjusted annually by the percent change in the average cost-of-living index determined by the Department of Revenue). On November 2000, the City Commission of the City of Pompano Beach enacted an ordinance exercising the authority granted by the State of Florida by granting the additional $25,000 to the eligible residents in the City of Pompano Beach.

On November 2006, the electors of the State of Florida approved yet another amendment increasing the maximum additional exemption for eligible low income senior citizens from $25,000 to $50,000. The City Commission of the City of Pompano Beach adopted the ordinance No.2009-06 exercising the authority granted by the State of Florida increasing the additional low income senior exemption to eligible Pompano Beach residents from $25,000 to $50,000.
